On May 11th, David and I met in Cumberland and began a 180-mile bike trip from Cumberland MD to Washington DC. This is a record of the trip.
These were our bikes the night before beginning. See how clean and shiny they are!
On departure day, Papa Buck drove us down to the Cumberland terminus of the canal.
The C&O path was quite muddy with lots of puddles we had to go through. Not having fenders on our bikes made it a messy ride both for our bikes and us!
At mile 157 we went through the Paw Paw tunnel.
First days campsite
Thursday was uneventful except for the rain and lots of hard sloughing through mud puddles. No pictures or audio was taken.
On Friday morning, we visited Harpers Ferry and then biked into Brunswick for lunch.
Dam #5 – Stonewall Jackson and his forces tried to destroy it during the civil war to disrupt canal operation.
Lunch at a cafe in Brunswick. Bellies are full and the rain has stopped. And we only have 20 miles to go today.
Point of Rocks station – considered one of the most photographed train station in the US.
With Michael James at Great Falls
A quick break at lock 10. As we got near to Georgetown, the breaks became more frequent as Mike got more tired!
At the end of the C&O canal
On the trainride home from Washington to Cumberland.
